Mavs’ rally provides triumph, confidence

“He’s such a competitor. He thrives on that”

PHOENIX — Who knows if Dirk Nowitzki’s sprained left ankle can withstand this type of punishment in a grueling playoff series, but at least the Dallas Mavericks understand that whomever they might face, even with Nowitzki hobbling, they can take them down to the wire.

And finally, after Sunday’s come-from-behind 105-98 victory over the Suns, buoyed by a 27-9 pasting in the final quarter, the Mavs also know they can pull one of these out.

The wounded Nowitzki, having put up a game-high 32 points and 12 rebounds, was sprawled on a training table after the game, his sprained left ankle and both knees wrapped in ice packs. It’s become routine. Read more

Mavs had the punch line ready with Dirk returning

Even on the second day of the new month, you could count me among the April Fool prey.

Dirk Nowitzki, Avery Johnson. I admit to walking right into their Wednesday scam. Why didn’t someone tell me that door was there?

The ‘biggest game of the year’ for the Mavericks (actually, aren’t they all these days?) was still eight hours from tipoff, but to hear Dirk tell it, and also Avery, I was almost convinced the Big German might need immediate ankle transplant surgery.

The dour tones not only suggested Dirk would be the worst-dressed spectator for the Wednesday night Golden State game, but it also would be another week before the mangled ankle allowed him to suit up again. Read more

With big game looming in Dallas, no time for Warriors to dwell on loss to Spurs

“Sometimes you get heated, sometimes it’s emotional”

No time to savor wins or dwell on losses in the Western Conference. Not when there’s usually another big game the next night.

That’s the way Golden State has to look at things after its 116-92 loss at San Antonio on Tuesday night. That dropped the Warriors out of the top eight in the West, but instead of worrying too much about that, they were already looking ahead to Wednesday’s visit to Dallas.

The Mavericks _ who upgraded Dirk Nowitzki to day to day on Tuesday _ are seventh in the West, a game ahead of the ninth-place Warriors. Read more
