Q&a with Charles Barkley

“I was going to say Eliot Spitzer, but that was before last week.”

DALLAS — For Charles Barkley, the joy of sports presents itself in many ways. One is the camaraderie between players who become close friends.

One of Barkley’s best pals is Michael Jordan. The two first met at the 1984 Olympic training camp, later played on the 1992 Dream Team, and have described their relationship as close as brothers.

That closeness means, however, that nothing is out of bounds. So when Jordan recently went through a divorce, Barkley was supportive — with no holds barred. Read more

Mavs spread wealth in romp through East

“Everybody’s having fun with that. Everybody’s competing to get more assists, so it’s fun when we can do that.”

DALLAS — The week is playing out to perfection. The Mavericks appear to be revving up and there’s still two more to go in the tour of the East’s bottom five.

As impressive as the Mavs have played over the past three games — wire-to-wire blowouts over New Jersey and New York preceded another laugher from the start Wednesday, 118-93 against Charlotte — the real gauge of progress comes to town next week in the form of three division leaders — the Lakers, Celtics and Spurs.

But, until then, the Mavs can only play who’s on the schedule. And, in those terms, they’re pounding these teams as they hadn’t all season. Just when they needed some exhibition-like games for starters to mesh and a bench to be found, the Mavs are starting to feel good about themselves again. Read more

It’s about preparing for run in Kentucky

“We wanted to see if he would race a little closer to the pace and still finish strongly”

Until May 3, everything is prelude. Until then, everything is about preparation and education, conditioning and positioning. And then on May 3 - and you can count on this, file it with your taxes, or top it with a cherry and serve it to your in-laws - Pyro will be the best-prepared horse in the Kentucky Derby.

He took another step in his preparation, knocked out another lesson in his education, with Saturday’s $600,000 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. Pyro won by three lengths in rather workmanlike fashion over an upstart named My Pal Charlie, with Yankee Bravo third. No big deal: It was just prelude. Read more

If Mavs can’t start streak, they’ll slide to oblivion

“We have to be more persistent — that’s a big word — be more persistent about driving”

If Avery Johnson is the coach we think he is, the Mavericks turn everything around tonight at the AAC.

If Dirk Nowitzki is truly an MVP-caliber player, he puts his foot down right now. Hard.

If Jason Kidd is the point guard and gritty winner the Mavs thought they were trading for, he immediately starts giving his new team a personality transplant.

If Josh Howard wants to ever make another All-Star team, he remembers how to play like one.

If Jason Terry wants to keep being called ‘Jet,’ he quits disappearing when the Mavericks need him most. Read more
