Off Nights in Openers for James, Durant

“I’m always hard on myself even if I played well”

One is an expected MVP candidate, the other the heavy favorite for Rookie of the Year. Luckily for LeBron James and Kevin Durant, there’s a long way to go before the voting for the awards.

James had the worst opening game of his career, Durant’s shot was off in his NBA debut, and both were losers Wednesday on the first full night of action in the 2007-08 season.

Shortly after Cleveland raised its Eastern Conference championship banner, James endured a scoreless first half and finished with 10 points in a 92-74 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. He shot just 2-of-11 from the field, made five turnovers and was mostly a non-factor in the Cavs’ most lopsided home loss since April 5, 2005, and their worst loss in a home opener in six years. Cavaliers: Success still starts with LeBron

“I believe our team is going to win games because of who I am. I’m not going to allow our team to not play well.”

It might be happening now to Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki, winners of the last three NBA Most Valuable Player Awards, whose potentially crowning moments have been blocked mostly by Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs.

NBA: Knicks, Thomas find shelter in S.C.

The timing was exactly right for Isiah Thomas and the Knicks. Training camp opened just as the sexual harassment trial ended with a jury’s decision against him and Madison Square Garden.

If there was ever a time to get out of town for a week, this was it.

Charleston provided a shelter from the firestorm of media criticism and allowed Thomas to focus on something that has always been his escape from reality: basketball.

‘We had a good camp,’ Thomas said. ‘I think all of the guys are looking forward to going home. We had a good period down here in South Carolina.’ Read more
